Welcome to Bloedow's Bakery. It is a small family owned bakery located in Winona, Minnesota. It was first opened in 1924 by Ernest Bloedow who wanted to own his own bakery. Ernest and his wife opened a small one which expanded quickly and they decided to move it to it's current location on Broadway Street in 1925. Since then, it has thrived and has been passed down through the family of the Bloedow's over the following 80 years. In 2004 it was passed down to Hugh and Mary Polus, the first pair that were not part of the Bloedow family to run the business. Both Hugh and Mary are native Winonans and Hugh worked in the bakery since he was a teen and was mentored on the ways of the Bloedow's for 20 years. In March of 2012, Bloedow's Bakery was voted as the best donut shop in Minnesota by WCCO Best of Minnesota.

What does Bloedow's Bakery have to offer?
Although Bloedow's Bakery is probably most known for their sweet and delicious donuts. They also have cookies, rye breads, home made loafs and other pastries of all kinds. They have a weekly schedule of their filled donuts on their website. It is also located right when you walk into the shop. On Mondays it's bavarian cream, Tuesdays it's lemon or whip cream, Wednesdays it's apple, Thursdays it's bavarian cream again, Fridays it's lemon or whip cream again, and then on Saturday it's blueberry and bavarian cream (which if you can not guess, is one of their most popular filled donuts). Besides their filled donuts, they also have a well-known and very well loved donut. Which is the maple long john. You did not think you could get out of Minnesota without trying something maple flavored, did you? It is a must try for every first timer at Bloedow's Bakery. It is very sweet and rich with the maple flavored frosting and the donut is light and fluffy, almost like a pancake.

My Overall Experience with Bloedow's Bakery
After living in Winona, Minnesota for almost four years while attending Winona State University. Bloedow's Bakery has created a special place in my heart. Back in my hometown, we have a unique and extraordinary bakery as well, so having Bloedow's in town makes me a little less homesick. Typically it's a Saturday late morning when I go to Bloedow's. I have learned the earlier you go, the less busy it is. I have gone a few times where the line is outside the door. So major props to all the people who work there in the winter who deal with the cold breezes coming in and out of their front room. And speaking of the workers, they are always extremely nice and have the most amazing customer service. They are truly a big part of the Bloedow's Bakery experience.
I have not explored too many of their food items, but the one thing I get every time I go is their donuts. My go to is their glazed donut or their blueberry filled donut they offer on Saturdays. My favorite one use to be the the maple long john, but as I have mentioned earlier, it does have a very sweet and rich taste which can be a little much at times. One item that I do want to try one of these times is their donut holes (can you tell I'm a donut girl? haha).
So if you ever find yourself visiting or driving through Winona, Minnesota, consider stopping by Bloedow's Bakery and supporting a local owned shop. Because take my word on it when I say I donut know what I would do without them here in Winona.
