I'm a huge thrift shopper. The idea of finding someone else's trash and making it your treasure just completely astonishes me. So when I heard about thredUP through Do It On A Dime on Youtube (which I totally suggest checking Katherine out), I just KNEW I had to check them out. Back in December of 2016, my mother and I made a joint order and got a bunch of items from thredUP. We got 13 articles of clothing in total. My mother choose to get four various tops and jackets and I chose to get nine various pieces of clothing. Being over a year later, I still shop at thredUP more than actual retail stores. I've made three more orders since my first from December of 2016. Two of those being in 2017 and one in 2018. Plus I'm already planning to make my second purchase in 2018 in the next few months.

What is thredUP?

ThredUP is currently one of largest online consignment and thrift stores. They offer a large selection of woman's clothing (in plus size, maternity and juniors), accessories, shoes, handbags and they also offer kid's clothing. As of last year they have also started offering a product called Goody Boxes. Which is a non-subscription service that is a non-refundable $20 (but it is applied towards your purchase) that is either themed (currently cold weather essentials, office styles, and night out) or you can have a custom boxed tailored for you by one of their stylists. These boxes contain 12-15 pieces that you are able to try on at home and then pay for what you want to keep and send the rest back free of charge.

ThredUP receives all of their items from people like you and myself. You can request a clean out kit to send your clothes, accessories and shoes in. You can choose to have your clothes donated to charity or sell them directly through thredUP to make a profit off what you gave. Later on your clothes will be added to the shop for others to purchase.

ThredUP also has a HUGE selection for you to search through. You can search clothing by size, brand, price and color. So you have a wide array of customization when it comes to finding clothes you want to find and buy. I personally like to search by size and going from there since I find it gives me all the possible clothing items that they have that may fit me.

Why do I love shopping with thredUP?

  1. Items are constantly being added. If you are unable to find anything in your size or something in a specific look, come back in a few days or in a week or so to find new pieces. More items are going to be bought and more items are going to be put in the longer you wait. Some days you may not find anything you're interested in, but other times you may find a ton of items you just can not be without.

  2. Most of the items are like new. When shopping on thredUP, you can view the condition of the items you are buying. I find that eight out of ten times, the items are in excellent and like new condition. Some items even still have tags attached! Even the items that say they show minor wear still seem brand new to me.

  3. Things are incredibly easy to find. Compared to local thrift stores, you can find specific items with a few clicks of your mouse. I find myself spending hours at a thrift store to sometimes find a piece or two I just love. However, sometimes I spend an hour on thredUP and suddenly have a cart of 20 items.

  4. You are helping the environment by buying secondhand. As I mentioned, thredUP is an online consignment and thrift store. You can find pieces just as good as those you would find at your favorite store and you can help stop unnecessary waste in our landfills. ThredUp actually promotes their site and encourages their users to use the hashtag #secondhandfirst.

  5. You get brand name clothing for a discount. As you have probably seen, thredUP's prices are not like the prices you would see at your local thrift store. I think it helps to think about thredUP not too much as an online thrift store, but more of an online store for discounted clothing. But you get HUGE discounts varying from 40-90% off the normal retail value.

My experience shopping with thredUP.

As I mentioned at the beginning of this post, I've made three orders from thredUP since my first order I made back in December of 2016. I have gotten 27 pieces between the four orders. Only one piece of the 27 pieces was not what I expected, but that was my fault due to not reading something correctly. I probably wear at least two pieces I have bought from thredUP weekly. My best piece I ever scored on thredUP was a form fitting black GUESS dress for $16.80 when it was originally $108. I have never felt super attractive in a dress before until that dress walked into my life. Below are some of the other various pieces I have purchased through thredUP.

Right: Aeropostale Denim Jacket $18 Middle: Merona Flannel $7.20 Left: Love, Fire Dress $11.18

Right: Paper Crane Pullover Sweater $8.96 & American Eagle Outfitters Jeans $9.54

Left: Mossimo Supply Co. Active Pant $4.09

If you want to see me try on my entire order from February of 2018, then make sure to check out the blog post here.

These are just some of the pieces that I have gotten from my 2016 and 2017 orders. I feel as if I wear the flannel and jean jacket you see 24/7. I also got some other leggings that are not shown here from Aeropostale for $5.45 that I probably wear weekly. Overall, if you love scoring amazing deals on great quality clothing, then thredUP is for you. I swear I have not bought clothes from anywhere else since discovering thredUP. With over one year of experience with the site, I'll leave you all with some helpful tips to make your time on thredUP worth it.

Tips on making your shopping experience worth it on thredUP

  1. Search for coupon codes. ThredUP always has coupon codes. I have not made an order where I have not had my order further discounted. They typically always have a 15% coupon code available somewhere to use. You also get 40% off your first order, so remember to save this for when you make a bigger purchase.

  2. Carts on thredUP expire after 24 hours. If you are someone like me, you like to just throw items upon items in your cart and come to it later to cycle through it to pick the pieces you truly like and then buy them. However, on thredUP they take out all the pieces from your cart after 24 hours, so you are not hoarding items they could possibly sell to others. To go about this if you truly want a piece, but need to wait until payday or some other reason, just take the item out of your cart and add it back in. This will restart the 24 hour countdown. I have been able to hold on to some of my favorite pieces this way.

  3. You can earn credit by referring friends and family. ThredUp has an amazing referral program where all you have to do is send a link to your friend or family member for them to sign up under and they get $10 off their order and you also get $10 off your next order. My roommate actually saved more with the $10 off versus the 40% off that thredUP offered her when she first signed up.

  4. Not all items are an amazing deal. You have to remember that the people who list the prices for the pieces can not always find the original prices for items they are selling. So sometimes things are retailed higher than they may have been originally. Therefore their selling prices on thredUP may be fairly near their actual retail value. So make sure you are always on the lookout because sometimes you may not actually be getting a deal.

Have you shopped on thredUP before? What was your experience like? Or have you found other online thrift stores that you can not live without? Let me know in the comments below!
